Mossbauer Spectroscopy of 57 Fe Dennis

Using recoilless Mossbauer spectroscopy methods, we investigate the atomic absorption spectra of the 14.4keV transition in Fe compounds. The natural linewidth of this transition is determined to the correct order of magnitude with χν = .75. Hyperfine energy shifts in iron oxide and iron sulfate are investigated and measured. The ratio of ground and excited state magnetic moment in Fe is found to be −1.73(2). The internal magnetic field in metallic iron is found to be 350(2) kG. The phenomenon of relativistic time dilation is confirmed with χν = 1.52.

The anaerobic binding of Fe 2+ to apo and holo Mammalian ferritin has been studied in the pH range from 6.0 to 10.0.
